Second only to his singular achievements in the world's major mountain ranges may be Reinhold Messner's knack for fanning the flames of a controversy he means to extinguish. On September 4, the great Tyrolean alpinist held a press conference in Islamabad, Pakistan, producing a tattered leather boot that he claimed had belonged to his brother Günther, who died in 1970 while climbing 26,660-foot (8,126-meter) Nanga Parbat with Messner and a German team. Found with Günther's remains and near to where a fibula was recovered in 2000, Messner said the boot was further proof that he had not left his brother to die near the summit, as two members of the 1970 expedition claimed in their 2003 memoirs.
Since those accusations surfaced, Messner has sought to prove his side of
the story. According to Messner, he did not abandon Günther, but became separated from him during the descent and returned to search for him, finding only avalanche debris. In 2004, Messner produced as evidence Günther's fibula, found in a location consistent with his account of what transpired. What's more, he submitted the bone for DNA testing, which indicated beyond all reasonable doubt that it came from Günther's shin. But critics responded that because Messner had paid for the DNA testing and refused to release the bone for other tests, the results were inconclusive.

BALAKOT, 7 Nov 2005 (IRIN) - The winding, mountainous road to Balakot in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province (NWFP) is slow and dangerous, clogged with landslides and mounds of rocks that still shower down from the mountainside almost a month after the devastating regional earthquake that has claimed at least 73,000 people. Clusters of tents are dotted along the route, many homemade from a patchwork of old blankets and clothes. Balakot is now a centre for the relief effort in the region. Sitting in the lush Khagan Valley, thick with pine trees and encircled by snow-capped mountains, the settlement no longer resembles the town it once was.

A-Z presents below the full Spartathlon-2005 results. This year 102 runners out of 230 completed the race within the 36hours time-limit. Jens Lukas from Germany was the winner (24:26:39) for his third time in Spartathlon, Jean-Jaques Moros from France (25:03:30) second, and third was Markus Thalmann from Austria (26:33:42). During the race runners faced a variable weather with many changes from fair to rainy -sometimes torrential rain was a serious problem for all of them. Despite the fact that the pace was too fast for the leading pack, final times were pretty slow due to the weather conditions. For the first 50K Valmir Nunes (BRA) was leading at the head of the race, but later he slowed and finally dropped out of the race. Jean-Jaques Moros took the lead from that point and gave an even faster pace, passing the KM-100 in less than 8 hours. During the night hours at KM-150, Lukas reached Moros and for some distance they ran very closely each other, until KM-180 when Lukas took the lead from tired Moros and he finally finished in the first place. In women category, Japanese Kimie Noto was for second consequent year the winner with 30:23:27.

Spartathlon, during its 23 years history created a legend among the ultra-running events all over the world. From its birth back in 1983 until today thousands of runners accepted the challenge of the 246km non-stop grueling footrace but less than 1000 managed to reach the finish line. A-Z.gr presents in this article some useful tables containing historical records of Spartathlon. Here you can find details regarding the winners of past 23 years as well as best athletes and best performances of all times during this period. Yiannis Kouros dominates at every one of these tables, holding the most wins in the event having won four times the race (1983, 1984, 1986, 1990), holding the course record with 20h 25m from 1984 (an incredible record) and finally holding the four best performances in equal number of participations. Every year less than 40% of the starters pack crosses the finish line at the town of Sparta. This year (2005) the number of participants broke every previous record gathering in the starting list more than 277 runners.

The battle of Marathon in 490 B.C., one of the most famous battles in world history, constituted a landmark and a starting point in the history of civilization. The triumph of the genius of Miltiades and the self-denial of his soldiers made the hordes of Persians flee and rescued Athens and Hellenism from the utmost danger of subjugation to the barbarian invaders. The effects of the victory at Marathon continue to influence the present. It was the first victory against the planned domination of “Asianization” over Europe and an event with momentous significance. Because of this victory, Athens was able to achieve a great deal and bequeath the benefits of its knowledge, arts and virtue to mankind. Two and a half thousand years after that historical battle, a sports event, inseparably related to it, was born in Greece.

Spartathlon, one of the most famous ultrarunning events around the world, was held this year for 22nd time on Friday, 1st October. Over 183 athletes from 30 countries and 6 continents were present at the start line, under the holy rock of Acropolis and Parthenon Temple in Athens –the city that hosted the 2004 Olympic Games. Their objective was to endure, suffer and finish one of the most grueling renown ultrarunning road races. Spartathlon revives the heroic deed of messenger Fidippides, who on behalf of the Athenians, he ran some 246km– the distance from Athens to Sparta– to ask for the Spartans’ help in the war against the Persians (490 B.C.).

"This
Raid World Championship 2005 is likely to be remembered as the most physically
demanding adventure race ever devised. It is an authentic sporting and physical
challenge, with absolutely no respite," intimates race director Sylvain Thuault.
The crossing of the French, Italian and Swiss Alps will in fact entail more than
24,000 metres of elevation gain. In other words, more than twice that of last
year’s race in the Andes cordillera and representing an insurmountable barrier
that, at first sight, only the very best will come even close to scaling. "In
comparison, the most gruelling stage of this year’s Tour de France didn’t even
attain 5,000 metres of elevation gain," he added. For him: "Mental endurance
will also be a deciding factor. At the end of the day, it will no longer be a
fight against fatigue but against tormenting, physical pain".

When Lance Armstrong claimed his first yellow jersey on 3 July 1999 he gave millions of people hope. At the age of 27 the all-American champion proved there was life after cancer. He had ridden the Tour de France before, won stages in fact, but victory in his first appearance since he was struck down by the illness was a triumph of spirit. But surely his time in the overall lead of the world’s biggest bike race wouldn’t last much longer than the first week. Aficionados of the event knew his name and they recognized his weaknesses.

Eighty-one runners from twelve countries and nineteen American states ran 135 miles non-stop from Death Valley to Mt. Whitney on July 11-13, 2005 in the Kiehl’s Badwater Ultramarathon, the most demanding and extreme running race offered anywhere on the planet.
Scott Jurek, 31, of Seattle, WA took first place honors with a record time of 24 hours, 36 minutes, eight seconds in his first appearance in this event. Jurek is recognized as one of the world’s greatest endurance athletes, in particular for his seven consecutive victories in the Western States 100-mile Endurance Run, a race held on remote mountain trails. The previous record of 25:09:05 was set by Anatoli Kruglikov, 42, of Russia in 2000.
