This year marks 98 scholarships distributed for a total of $176,050. Money is raised annually from donations gathered at the Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run held in Silverton in July, from monies collected during the online lottery application, and from other donors. High school students from #Silverton can apply as well as students from three other towns that support the run (#LakeCity#Ouray and #Telluride) provided the student has volunteered at a Hardrock Hundred aid station. Students who have received the scholarship in the past and are still in college may apply for Continuing Education funds.
.
This scholarship was founded to honor the memory of Joel Zucker, a librarian from New York State who collapsed from an aneurysm the day after finishing his third Hardrock Hundred in 1998 at the age of 44. Joel loved Silverton and dogs. He roamed around town every afternoon after his morning run up Kendal Mountain giving out dog biscuits and greeting people.
.
Joel died doing what he loved most. He would be proud to know that in his name we are supporting the area’s youth to pursue higher education.
.
Tax-deductible contributions can be sent to Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado, P.O. Box 1673, Durango, CO 81302. Make check payable to “Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado” and include “Joel Zucker Scholarship” on the memo line.
