Mireia Miró has decided to retire from the ski mountaineering elite competition and get involved in new projects connected with the mountain. Miró suffered an injury to her knee in September 2011 and since then hasn't fully recovered, and is therefore not able to bear the level required in elite competition. This has been a key factor in her decision

"I like to think that life is composed by many stages and that there are changes. Those changes and the decisions we make happen for a reason and they are for the best. I will keep connected to the mountain, it's a part of me and it's were I feel good and I look optimistacilly to the future", said Mireia.

Catalan athlete Mireia Miró has taken the decision to retire from the top-level competition. On Mireia’s track record, several victories as ski mountaineering athlete and trail runners such as the World Cup in junior, espoir and seniro as well as victories in prestigious ski mountaineering races like Pierra Menta and Patrouille des Glaciers.

In September 2011 Miró suffered an injury to her knee during the trail running season. Since then, she has suffered pain with her knee which kept her from giving her best in her sportive performances.

This was one of the reasons that made Miró make the decision to not race in trail running this summer. The plan was to take some time off and focus on the recovery and return at the highest level in the winter season. The results have not been what she  expected and therefore Miró has made this choice: "This has been, without doubt, one of the toughest decisions I've ever had to make as this years have fullfilled me so much and I’ve experiences so much joy. I want to continue doing sport, and stay connected with the  sport and the mountain, think about new projects and even take part in some competition but at a whole new level. "

Miró's aim is to stay connected with both the sport and the mountain and she is already thinking about new projects that will materialise in the future: “I started competing 8 years ago. For all this time I’ve spend lots of energy and effort on the competition and I still want to go out on the mountains with another mentality

Mireia said: “We are already working on new projects, that will go in different directions. On one side I’d like to pass on my experience and the learning I’ve acquired during those years and, on the other side, develop personal projects, travels, challenges and other activities”. For instance, this summer Miró had the opportunity to give talks in schools in order to pass on her experience to the students as well as practising different outdoor sports and starting new challenging projects.

From now on, Miró's goal will be to continue to enjoy the mountain where she feels good and happy, but from a different perspective. Mireia faces this new period with optimism and she is sure that she will be able to find good moments like she has already had from past years when she was in the sports elite: " I would like to thank you all the people that somehow have been with me during this time and have make it so special. I now start a new chapter that I want to keep sharing. It is unknown what I'm going to write on it but I'm thrilled I've been able to to take this step forward and look again to the future.”
